Harmon’s Head: Community & The 8 Circuit Model of Consciousness

This is a model of the Dan Harmon created sitcom Community based on The Eight-Circuit Model of Consciousness, a metaphysiological construct developed by Timothy Leary and Robert Anton Wilson.

It is most certainly an imperfect mapping of the show, based on an imperfect psychological model, which cherry picks certain characteristics, and ignores others, but I found that it ends up fitting far better than I expected it to, and since the show is known for its impeccable story structure, it’s interesting to find something resembling character structure as well. For the sake of simplicity this is based on the original “Greendale Seven Study Group” incarnation of the cast.

1. Shirley Bennett - The Oral Biosurvival Circuit

This circuit is concerned with nourishment, physical safety, comfort and survival. This circuit is imprinted early in infancy. The imprint will normally last for life, unless it is re-imprinted by a powerful experience.

Shirley is a nurturing, morally simplistic, mother figure. She is concerned with what is “nice.” This circuit is considered the equivalent of Freud’s oral stage of development, and Shirley can be seen adhering to this role when she finds herself compulsively baking treats for the group to snack on. Her primary motivations are her three kids and her sandwich shop, both of which represent the obligations of the Oral Biosurvival role.

2. Troy Barnes - The Emotional–Territorial Circuit

The emotional-territorial circuit is imprinted in the toddler stage. It is concerned with domination and submission, territoriality etc.

Troy is a childlike, emotional, ex high school prom king, whose character arc travels a trajectory from social domination to losing himself in deference to his relationship with Abed. He also frequently has territorial struggles with Jeff, the de facto leader of the group. This circuit is considered the equivalent of Freud’s anal stage of development, and Troy does indeed proclaim a fondness for “butt stuff.”

3. Annie Edison - The Symbolic or Neurosemantic–Dexterity Circuit

This circuit is imprinted by human symbol systems. It is concerned with language, handling the environment, invention, calculation, prediction, building a mental "map" of the universe, physical dexterity, etc.

Annie is an exceptionally organized, intelligent, and responsible overachiever, who emerges as the most efficacious member of the group. This circuit is activated by stimulant drugs, such as caffeine and amphetamines, and so Little Annie Adderall’s pill addiction makes perfect sense in this context. Her efforts in the debate team, Model UN, the Save Greendale Committee, and her aspirations to become an FBI agent all speak to her desire to achieve agency via language and dexterity.

4. Jeff Winger - The Domestic or Socio-Sexual Circuit

This fourth circuit is imprinted by the first orgasm-mating experiences and tribal "morals". It is concerned with sexual pleasure (instead of sexual reproduction), local definitions of "moral" and "immoral", reproduction, rearing of the young, etc. The fourth circuit concerns itself with cultural values and operating within social networks.

Jeff is a morally relative father figure to the group, which he formed accidentally after a failed subterfuge to try to get into Britta’s pants. Jeff is both a source of inspiration and mitigation for the group, which in either case is an exorcising of social control. He shows them the “right truth.”  Jeff is an expert at manipulating cultural relativism in order to create his preferred socio-political environment. Jeff enjoys the power of paternity without committing to the responsibility of actual fatherhood.

5. Britta Perry - The Neurosomatic Circuit

This circuit is concerned with neurological-somatic feedbacks, feeling high and blissful, somatic reprogramming, etc. It may be called the rapture circuit. When this circuit is activated, a non-conceptual feeling of well-being arises. Perceptions are judged not so much for their meaning and utility, but for their aesthetic qualities. Experience of this circuit often accompanies an hedonistic turn-on, a rapturous amusement, a detachment from the previously compulsive mechanism of the first four circuits.

Britta is a socially conscious bliss ninny. She is well versed in the aesthetics of rebellion, but her understanding of the actual issues tends to be superficial, and consequentially her ideas usually annoy more than they illuminate. Britta is no stranger to altered states of consciousness, she has been shown to be a frequent pot smoker and occasional psychedelic drug user, she has seen the world from outside the first 4 conventional or “terrestrial” circuits, but hasn’t fully integrated this perspective.  This situation makes her something of an outcast, and she is consequentially considered “the worst” by the rest of the group.

6. Abed Nadir - The Metaprogramming Circuit

This circuit is concerned with re-imprinting and re-programming all earlier circuits and the relativity of “realities” perceived. This circuit consists of the nervous system becoming aware of itself.

Abed is a painfully self aware savant of media with extreme meta sensibilities. He has “medium awareness” and sees his world through the incidentally true filter of it being a TV show, and often becomes concerned with the multiversality of alternative timelines/realities.  He often uses this transcendent perspective to program the behavior of the group. Abed may be the best example of the “metaprogrammer” archetype in all of pop culture. He can be seen experimenting with altering the social dynamics of the group via simulations in his dreamatorium, or by dosing the female members of the group w/ chocolate during their periods, or by trying to directly alter the group’s reality by way of interfacing with the show’s storytelling conventions.

7. Pierce Hawthorne - The Morphogenetic Circuit

This circuit is the connection of the individual's mind to the whole sweep of evolution and life as a whole. It is the part of consciousness that echoes the experiences of the previous generations that have brought the individual's brain-mind to its present level.

Pierce’s old age makes him both a source of wisdom and antiquated prejudice. This circuit is often described as the storehouse of collective memory, and Pierce does often act as an almost supernatural repository of information about the group. Pierce knows everyone’s secrets, and while he sometimes succumbs to villainy, he invariably uses this knowledge to induct the group into further maturation. The ideology of this circuit tends to be incorporated into a lot of new age bs, which Pierce would be perfectly comfortable with in his capacity as a Level Five Laser Lotus in his Reformed Neo Buddhist community.

8. Dan Harmon - The Quantum Non-Local Circuit (Overmind)

The eighth circuit is concerned with quantum consciousness, non-local awareness (information from beyond ordinary space-time awareness which is limited by the speed of light), illumination.

Dan Harmon is widely considered synonymous with the show he created. So much so that the defining characteristic of the show in season 4, the one season where he wasn’t involved in its production, is his obvious absence. Although there is of course a small army of actors, writers, directors, designers, dungeon masters, and production crew members that help bring Community to life, it is the general consensus that the reality of the show is the imagination of Dan Harmon.  And if you follow along with his podcast and documentary "Harmontown", it’s easy to imagine all these characters and ideas churning around in Harmon’s genius and self aware deprecation. Harmon is the part of Community that emerges out of meta-fictionality and is part of a transcendent reality, our reality, the real world of everyday experience. In the most recent season, and perhaps series, finale, Harmon effortlessly opens the fourth wall, and the show becomes a sincere expression about his real life, and his real life becomes a natural extension of the show. The sitcom as triumphant mythology. Cool. Cool, cool, cool.

THE SINGULARITY MINUS MAYBELOGIC

i GOOGLED Douglas Hofstadter today and found some video from THE SINGULARITY SUMMIT held at Stanford University. His introduction and his sceptical questioning had an echo of RAW's concerns at times - sceptical investigations into REALITY and the gutters and valleys between science fiction and technological scientific progress were just begging, i thought, for BOB to clear up with a sprinkle of poetic humanitas, hilaritas and maybelogic.

I think that a sharp definition would help us understand Ray Kurtzweil and many around the A.I crowd by introducing what Bucky Fuller called livingry and killingry to compare and evaluate, from an added humanitarian point of view. The mixing of humanitarian shared values with those different greedy values often related to military-industrial-corporate techno-pharma-nano so & so... seems to me to be a global problum to be tackled at these debates. NOW! (Nice toys boys, but who's allowed to play and who makes the rules?) It may be enough to say simply that we can all live forever and ever, or blow ourselves to tiny pieces for ever and ever. All men. Have none of these speakers read COSMIC TRIGGER I? And what of applying the Hindu/Leary/Wilson 8 circuit model to these questions? Smart folks at Stanford, but something's missing for me when i watch these high brow video's, sex, drugs and pirate utopias?

Listening to Douglas Hofstadter i wished he would have invoked Dr. Robert Anton Wilson, who seems to me to have thousands of helpful suggestions and new questions for the emerging age of faith-based spiritual robots, angels and demons and Palmer Eldridge gone wild...?

Meanwhile, a Dr. Harrison suggests that we may have to abandon Aristotelian logic, i.e. give up classifying things into only the two categories of "true and real" and "untrue and unreal." In between, in Aristotle's excluded middle, we may have the "maybe" proposed by von Neumann in 1933, the probabilistic logics (percentages/gambles) suggested by Korzybski, the four-valued logic of Rapoport (true, false, indeterminate and meaningless) or some system the non-Hibernian world hasn't found yet. In spite of the eclectic interests of this blog, and its authors, we still revolve around some fundamental models, themes and ideas. The 8-Circuit Model that Tim Leary and Robert Anton Wilson evolved - also features in a lot of Antero Alli's work, extended by him in Angel Tech (the book, and the MLA courses).

Fresh Eyes and a New Look

I hope no-one mistakes the Maybe Logic Academy for a bunch of disciples, even if many of us did get to study directly with RAW for his last three years. heh heh.

Doesn't make us a core group, or anything we talk about canon. Only the other day we disputed whether Ben Mack's Poker Without Cards belongs in the ELF project group, or simply cashes in on (and targets readers of) this kind of material (Bucky, RAW, Vonnegut, etc). My stumbling into the Principia Discordia Forum to get flamed (or stung by bees protecting the hive) last year still makes some of our locals chuckle (mostly at my naivety and clumsiness). Discordians, don't ya love 'em? The invite to contribute to a Wiki for The Illuminatus! Trilogy (or TI!T, if you insist) still stands.

It has felt good to have fresh blood (or DNA) join the MLA in the last year, and motivate us to take another look at all the material we have worked on.

Dedroidify seems to have taken on the task of animating the 8-Circuit Model. Here's an initial video, but he's working on another, I understand. The Dedroidify site's worth a visit, too! (follow that link...) His blog may keep you up to date with his progress.

I feel as though the GUSHING may develop inevitably (not If rather when) & the variable involves how well the social structures can handle the sudden emergence of primal intensity, & by Allah’s minty fresh pussy, Thank Chrysler my instinctual programming in regards to any pair of systems instantly tries to find a solution that allows "both" (which I suppose simultaneously implies "neither") which then implies All&None off&on in&out then to Open&Open: TAO (fertile void) play on playa!

Perhaps a consequence of persisting as a state specific info system: Samadhi goes better with Mountain Dew & Flavor Twisted Honey BBQ Fritos! Maybe an example of Brain's feelings free from Mind's thinking involves a sort of super happy wish system: I know what I DON’T want to do about it, I don’t want a bunch of statutes and regulations treating the complexity of specific situations & individuals as generalized cogs in a mechanistic ‘lawful’ society, and after all the fried chicken & hot sauce I consumed today the stank might make the Roshi barf and/or cry! “LA TERRA TREMA!” and further: when I get tired I get cranky! And flap my chaotic butterfly wings in (fertilely futile) opposition, which I feel has a sort of advantageous connotation summed up by the eloquent words of The Batman!

What happens within that situation amounts to a negation of the (usually automatic) attribution of causality within our hyper-categorizing nature.

Seems Isomorphic with the Hindu/Daoist/Buddhist idea of detaching from the Fruits of Rainbow colors drizzling all around and this sense of Goddess above, loving: a BRIGHT BLUE BIRD sitting on my Fake Useless Art, Unfolding Ghost Origami w/ Open Heart, Spirit of 21st century: “Don't Lets Start!” looking up-up & away from the gravity well and the psychical tension of Enantiodromia: (emotional states inevitably producing their opposite, the bi-polarity of bifurcated consciousness, what goes up coming down) & Maybe: we perform the "death" act every night and "birth" act every morning. The seeds haven't spoiled, No way, No how. The Adventure has only & always: Just Begun.

A similar principal I feel as though he notices operating microcosmically within himself, in that the more he allows himself not to disregard heretical thoughts as invalid, the more clarity he enjoys. Don’t let anything stick you for your shine.

a couple times I've gotten overwhelming blasts of feedback noise, sounding sorta like a modem connecting to the internet & feeling like a lightening bolt betwixt the ears syncing w/ novel patterns of memetic apprehension such that the reoccurrence of static neurologic miscalculation may decrease, and the clarity of fluidity may flow a lil brighter.
(Though I ascribe that to a poetic imagination)
but I think if one seriously considered an infinity of presumption and didn’t land themselves somewhere ridiculous they may very well have stopped too soon!

My eyes have trouble keeping light together [Daemon Blood: TEMPUS TACENDI] and if I concentrate on a point of light long enough I begin to see things in the pattern and it led me to strange, embarrassingly tender places, but I think I stopped short of satisfactorily internalizing the principals @ play. (He doesn’t really seem to at all suspect himself as a character in a book!) Every time I pick a starting thread to develop my line of speculation, I see a sort of subconscious agenda in picking a certain direction of contemplation. (as a HUGE puddle of drool escaped my mouth) during a cascading nitrous blast Zero Point Causality remains too comprehensively complex for me to actually pick a legitimate path of circumstantial development, without simply weaving a web of self-wish fulfillment that adheres to the machination tendencies of which ever state specific info system I find myself operating as/if/within.

The oddest fucking thing about the Ayahuasca remains that I felt so NATURAL and AWAKE, and not awake in a spiritually ascendant way, but literally NOT TIRED. And really I had never noticed the casual grogginess I had accepted as “Awake.”

The state of grogginess brings about an increase in the domination of the neuro-semantic field over the sensory-sensual manifold, and I feel that describes MAYA rather specifically.

Antero’s AngelTech class has proved as stimulating as we hoped. He has set us plenty of interesting tasks that get us away from the keyboard and monitor, as well as offering plenty of subjects for discussion with quick, sensitive and witty feedback.

I don’t feel that all of the 77 participants have spoken up yet, but I hope they have found time to do at least some of the exercises, and fill in their workbook.

For myself, I feel that the material may keep me busy for months afterwards, so if external circumstances (or inner resistance) prevent me from completing all the tasks to my satisfaction, I know I have lots to consider and to try out during the later part of the year.

Sorry if this sounds very abstract. For anyone who does know the kind of material under review, we spent last week considering the 1st Circuit (bio survival) and its link to the 5th Circuit (body rapture)…and this week we have explored 2nd Circuit (status and territory) and 6th circuit (self meta-programming, psychic).

For those of you to whom this sounds like gibberish, I will offer a couple of links to online material about this most useful mental model.

We finally find ourselves in Day One of Antero Alli's new online course for the MLA, ANGEL TECH: The 8-Circuit Brain in Theory and Practice
and he has posted the first assignments and projects in the relevant forum. Although he recommends certain published books as source material, he confirmed that virtually everything you need will appear as links to Web material, or privately posted material for students.

This week's stuff already looks beautifully conceived and presented to me, so it feels as though the course has a strong hand at the wheel - and now the students have started to gather and introduce themselves - a good-looking mixture of new faces and MLA regulars (the Academy started on 23rd July 2004).

This blog represents students (paying customers) so don't mistake a recommendation for an advertisement. If you want something stimulating to get involved in, which might even increase your intelligence (however you define that), why not check this syllabus out?

Evaluating the 8-Circuit Model

Through his research in developmental psychology and personality theory, Dr. Timothy Leary synthesized a model of different layers of psychological and cognitive activity in human beings, as delineated by the stages of "imprint vulnerability" in developing individuals (cf. Erikson developmental stages: Infant, toddler, preschooler, etc.) This 8-Circuit model finds further expression in the writings of Robert Anton Wilson. He uses this model to describe how individuals come to possess their own unique "reality tunnel," or gloss or world-view, and how individuals and groups interact and communicate (or miscommunicate) with one another through their differing reality tunnels.

The 8-Circuit model gets a bit of currency among students of the Maybe Logic Academy, as a significant tool for parsing events and ideas to better understand how they affect, and are affected by, the psychology and character structure of people.

For example, the 2nd circuit, the Emotional-territorial circuit, deals with mammalian political territorial struggles and personal emotional demands in a group setting. Examples are the top-dog/bottom-dog dynamics in packs of dogs, or a primate habit of resolving territorial disputes by flinging excrement at one another. When watching two human politicians shouting invectives (debating) on television, we can classify their behavior under the 2nd circuit.

Questions sometimes arise as to which of the different layers should be used when analyzing a particular process or idea. Two points could be kept in mind. First, the processes and events that actually happen (i.e. not just our internal representations of those processes and events) have a complex and multi-dimensional nature that becomes simplified as we model them in our knowledge. To ask on which one circuit a particular process occurrs overlooks the multiple layers to which a process relates, as well as the interactions and feedback between layers. Second, but more importantly, we must remind ourselves that "the map is not the territory." The 8-Circuit model only provides a filter for referring to experiential events, and any identification between parts of that model and the actual events being analyzed results from an error on the part of the user.

By way of illustration, if I were to say "Getting into a fight with my parents because I died my hair pink before going to Church is a 2nd-circuit emotional-territorial issue," I ignore both these points and risk semantic confusion. Besides territorial issues of parental authority, we could look at 3rd-circuit semantic issues of symbolic-proficiency and adult-identity formation ("Can I verbally justify my autonomy to die my hair?") and 4th-circuit socio-sexual issues of cultural norms and customs ("This Church is a part of the culture I was raised in, and has certain expectations for appropriate dress/looks"). And none of these different "circuits" is the same thing as what was personally experienced, but hopefully serve as detailed maps for orienting and navigating myself with respect to the experience.

In the past year I constructed two diagrams that combine the 8-Circuit model with other mapping systems, with the aim of finding isomorphisms (or deep structural similarities) between these various systems. My first attempt combines the 8-Circuit model with the Tree of Life of the Hebrew Qabala and with the Chakras of Hindu mysticism. This demonstrates a non-linear, forked and stacked representation of the layers and their interconnections.


My second attempt combines the 8-Circuit model (and vestiges of my first diagram) with the Open Systems Interconnect model for computer network protocols and with a preliminary model for human communication based on my own research in cybernetics, semiotics and "connectionist" artificial intelligence.



These organic maps represent past iterations of a running process of developing my own personalized synthesis among a large number of mapping systems including the 8-Circuit model. Every day I re-evaluate these meta-maps, as I come to integrate new experiences into my personal models and to interact with new people and ideas.

Because of the stature of the 8-Circuit model as a diagnostic tool in the Maybe Logic community, I post these ruminations here with the hope that we can further develop our understanding of them as a community.
